Using technology to solve problems is my life. As soon as I could walk I was always toddling behind the big console TV trying to figure out how it worked. Growing up in the Silicon Valley I got my first Apple II in 4th grade and have been on computers ever since. I love how technology, when used correctly, can simplify, enhance, and excite our lives.
In my career I have worked with retailers, financial companies, governments, and non-profits to design, code, implement, and manage technology projects ranging from enterprise-wide systems to quick single-user utilities. I am a firm believer that there is no “one right technology” but that the elegant solution is the one that matches the user and the problem.
I currently work from my home in Camas, Washington as the Vice President of Technology at Virginia-based Unboxed Technology where we create exciting, interactive tools to help train employees, sell products to customers, and build connections to clients’ brands. I have worked with all sorts of technologies. I am a guru in the Microsoft technology stack – C#, ASP.NET, Silverlight, SQL Server, Visual Studio, and the myriad of operating systems and supporting tools that go with them. But I’m not just a Microsoft guy. I’ve worked with Unix and Linux operating systems, developed in Java, PowerBuilder, Delphi, COBOL, and other scripting languages, and I’ve managed and coded for Oracle and MySQL databases. I find myself now spending a lot of time working with mobile technologies such as iPhone and Android as they seem to be a big part of our future.
I’ve always tried to keep a balance between my hands-on IT skills and my ability to understand the business it supports. I graduated in 1998 from Brigham Young University with a Masters Degree in Accounting with an Information Systems emphasis. I’ve spent a significant portion of my career managing projects and doing analysis/design work. I am a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP). I’m working on improving my graphic design skills as well.
At home, I’m a family man. My four kids keep me busy and young. I’ve learned soccer in a downpour can still be quite fun. I love outdoor grilling and hiking and camping. I like to relax by watching my favorite shows with my wife and I’ve never met an ice cream I didn’t like. I am active in my local church congregation and volunteer much of my free time there.
